Winter Colour in Moraine Valley

Winter Colour in Moraine Valley

Moraine Valley Panorama, Rocky Mountain National Park

River Willows wear their burning red and auburn winter colours as a snow storm rages above the distant Forest Valley and the Continental Divide.

With the Big Thompson River meandering off to the left of the image, this area of Moraine Park is covered with River Willows and similar plants. Along early to mid-Autumn, the Willows put on a beautiful display as they start to develop deep, rich and to my eye amazing shades of Red, umber and yellow. When the early morning or the late afternoon light kisses the Willows just right, they seem to take on the guise of a burning bush. They keep their colouring until Spring where the branches slowly return to their normal green and brown colour.
