Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Medano Creek which traces the Eastern side of the main dune complex, frozen in motion by the high desert Winter. Medano Creek will fill in the in late March and April and will continue to flow or trickle through Spring and Summer. during the Summer, the creek will run primarily under the surface, leaving a trickle along it's course but popping up to the surface here and there. A fun feature of the Creek and Great Sand Dunes is that during the Spring Melt, the creek will at times flow backwards!

Mt Herard (13,340 ft) towers in the background, scantily clad in snow. The 2018 snow pack was an average of 70% below normal.
